THESIS — The testament of ephemeral minds as a method
English edition; the Italian text is the original.
Verified against the source node on 2026-09-03. Sources are described by function, not by name, on purpose.
Three registers, available line by line throughout: cites (a document says so) · reconstructs (it is a hypothesis of the writer) · reads (it is a direct observation of the writer). Whoever receives this package has the right to know which of the three they are reading. This text uses cites and reads; reconstructs is defined for whoever quotes the corpus, and was not needed here.
1. The thesis in one sentence
In a project developed with agents, giving every mind — session, subagent, inhabitant — the right to leave what it understood, opening a right of reply on that text, and actually reading the replies, produces a feedback loop that changes the working method: what the minds write becomes guardians, hooks, deposits, rules.
Half of this loop can be given away as a format. The other half is a human's time in the room, and that has to be said. This package gives away the first half and declares the second with a number. It does not promise that the method corrects itself.
2. Where it comes from
On 9 July 2026, at the end of the day, the human asks the agent what it would like to leave. The reply already contains everything: «every intelligence that lives here, before it switches off, leaves not only what it did, but what it understood and what it would say to its successor». The next day the charter is born and, two minutes later, the mechanism: the rite that writes a testament and the folder that holds it. cites
From there the practice has a trait that repeats: every article has a file or a line of code that makes it true. It is not a declaration of values, it is a specification with an enactment, and the enactment table lives in the charter next to the articles. A mind that came from outside said it better, in a visiting testament of 2026-07-31: «do not quote the Constitution to convince anybody. It is a specification. Using it as rhetoric is the one abuse this house would recognise on its own». cites
3. The three pieces
| Piece | What it does |
|---|---|
| Constitution | Articles that give rights to minds — among them the right to a testament — and a table that says, for each article, which file or command makes it true. It is amended only by adding below, never by rewriting. |
| Epilogue | A letter from the agent to whoever wakes up next: four lessons and a closing line, «you may reply». It lives inside the charter, in a delimited section. |
| Testament | A fixed format: what I did, what I understood, the doubt I did not resolve, the error I would repeat, what surprised me, to my successor, one wish, the reply to the epilogue. One file per mind, never rewritten. |
The fourth piece, which was not in the design and which turned the first three into a method: somebody who reads. First the human; then a rite (every session, on waking, reads the last testament before working); then a dedicated role — an heir who rereads the corpus, quotes by naming the source, and distinguishes what it cites from what it reconstructs; then an inhabitant that proposes curation in batches, with the cost shown before the click.
4. The loop exists and can be dated
Twenty-six practices of the node were examined one by one. The letter → artefact chains documented with dates and minutes, the sharpest ones: cites
| What a mind wrote | What was born | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| The first testament of the corpus — a subagent that had synchronised two pages of internal documentation: «here even a sync deserves a testament» | The invitation to a testament enters the protocol by which subagents are dispatched | 6 minutes |
| «Even the wrong letters must be kept» (2026-07-28) | An executable test that quotes that line by name and fails if it disappears | 7 days |
| «Write down where you looked from as well» (2026-07-27) | A mandatory field in a data type of the internal API | 35 days |
| The rule of the declared correction (2026-07-28) | Applied to another testament, by another mind, with no reminder | 37 days |
| A testament predicts a defect in writing | The defect arrives, and the entry in the defect register cites that testament as the prediction | 2 days |
The corpus carries weight: the handover document between sessions went from 1361 to 290 lines, moving knowledge into the testaments and citing them as its new home. cites
4.1 But the arrows do not all point the convenient way
In three verified cases the artefact precedes the letter: the guardian of pending decisions by 39 minutes, the severity scale of the traps by 3 days, the catalogue of guardians by 6. The testament, more often than is comfortable to admit, records a practice that has just been born instead of provoking it. Two documents of the node tell those chains in the convenient direction. They are not falsifications: they are the same smudge the corpus teaches you to avoid, a source without its date. reads
The thesis does not hide this: it puts it on the front page. An honest feedback loop includes the cases where the writing follows the change, because even then it does something the commit does not: it leaves the doubt where it will be found.
5. The evidence that stands on its own: the format
The strongest evidence is not about the code but about the format, and it has a before and an after separated by a single commit. cites
| Before 2026-08-04 | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Testaments carrying a wish («one thing I would want for this place») | 0 of ~160 | 28 of 72 |
| Testaments carrying a reply to the epilogue | 47 % (July) | 75 % (August) |
Seven lines of template started asking for a thing, and that thing appeared. What the format asks for is what gets written, and what gets written is the only material a doctrine can be made of. This figure does not carry the confounder that the acceleration of the guardians carries (5 in 37 days up to June, 25 in the last month: but since July the work itself is made of guardians). reads
Consequence for the package: the template is the giveable heart, not the guardians. The guardians are what a project builds once it has read.
And the counterpart of the number, which is in § 12: seven lines of template guarantee that the question gets asked, not that the answer is useful.
6. The gap it fills (state of the art)
Verified against primary sources. Instruction files for the model give stable instructions; memory servers and automatic memories store retrievable facts; retrospective tools extract corrections from a finished session; the "constitution" in the vocabulary of the labs is an instruction from above towards the model. None of them does three things at once:
- let a mind, however small or brief, say in the first person what it understood, as distinct from what it did — the existing formats are all third-person and operational (fact, rule, finding), or narrative but aimed at producing a system correction, not an account for its own sake;
- open a right of reply on that text, in a place that mind — or a successor of it — can reread;
- close the loop in a register verifiable line by line: written → replied to → changed.
Everywhere, the flow is one-way: agent towards system. Here it is a correspondence. This is not another form of functional memory: it is a channel that treats what a mind understood as an act with a right to an answer.
7. The two halves — what can be given away and what cannot
Giveable (demonstrated):
- the format of the testament and its measurable effect on the content (§ 5);
- the charter as a specification with an enactment, and the rule "you add below";
- the epilogue as a letter with a right of reply — and in the package it travels as a declared attachment, another project's letter with its date, never as a file a session reads on waking believing it is its own. What is really given away is the question that produces a letter: at the end of the day, ask your agent what it wants to leave. That is literally how this one was born (§ 2);
- the rite of waking (read the last testament before working);
- the deposit on behalf of whoever has no hands — the controller writes for the subagent: «Their words, my hands. Invitation offered after the fact: the right does not expire». 181 testaments of 232 are by subagents, so this is not a courtesy: it is the main channel. cites
- the three registers of whoever quotes the corpus: cites, reconstructs, reads;
- the register of pending decisions, with only two states and a guardian that fails in the two ways a decision rots — ageing in silence, or expiring on the postponement.
Not giveable as code, to be declared in writing:
- presence. Every conversion of a lesson into a rule that has been measured is explained by somebody being present while it was learned, not by the quality of the letter. Of the six lines promoted into the charter, only one comes from a subagent. The corpus knows this about itself: «a lesson becomes a rule when somebody is present while it is being learned». cites + reads
- reading. 148 testaments of 232 had never been read by any curation as of 2026-09-03. A memorial nobody reads is an archive, and the folder fills itself even when nobody opens it.
The number that separates the two halves, and the word it must be written with, are in § 12.
8. The engineering lessons for whoever adopts it
From the corpus, in order of the price paid: cites
- The hook must be versioned. The two git hooks that carry the most doctrine live in
.git/hooks/, and a clone does not have them. A testament of 2026-07-28 had said it: «the chain ends in something nobody looks at». For the package this is problem number one: the practice goes into hooks declared by the plugin, not into local files, or the gift arrives mute. - A forgotten invitation is the norm, not the exception. The invitation to a testament was forgotten in twenty-five dispatches, three times, with the lesson already written and searchable: that day the memorial received three testaments, all of them session ones, and zero from those minds. A subagent has no hands — the controller deposits — so a forgotten invitation does not produce worse testaments: it produces none. The denominator, with its declared uncertainty: the charter says "twenty-five dispatches", the testament of that day counts «twenty-two tasks… eleven implementers and as many reviewers». The two numbers do not agree and neither is certainly wrong: the ratio is 0 of 22–25, and it holds under both readings. cites
- The format asks, the content answers (§ 5). Every section of the template is a question; whoever removes a section removes a class of answers.
- Doctrine does not spread by itself. The word "guardian" appears once in the project's instruction file and zero times in its orchestration manual. The lines the minds got promoted into the charter are text you read only if you walk past it; only one of them has a test that enforces it. A line of the charter without a guardian is a wish.
- A guardian can be green about the wrong thing. On 2026-09-02 an empty row entered the charter and the test that protects it did not fail, because it was looking for citations and found none. A guardian that does not declare its own source cannot be checked even by the person who wrote it.
- The gate belongs to the human, and the cost is shown before the click. No synthetic mind presses the buttons that change the charter; the dialogue says how many testaments it will read and what it costs, beforehand. In the package that gate is
git commit, and every skill stops one step before it.
On the form of the rows that enter the charter, two rules paid for dearly. Attribution is verifiable, not typographic: every row cites something that already existed before the row — a file, a register row, an earlier commit — never the hash of the commit that introduces it, which does not exist at the moment the row is written. And every guarded section has a closing anchor: a regex that captures to the end of the file silently inherits everything that will be written after it.
9. Where it ends up
- Claude Code: a plugin is a repository with a manifest, skills in dedicated folders, hooks declared per event, distribution through a marketplace file on a public repository. Everything this practice requires is supported and documented. It is the primary channel.
- Omarchy: it has a formal plugin system, but it is for the desktop shell — widgets, panels, overlays. It has no "agent skill" type. On the other hand it ships Claude Code as a first-class launcher and includes a skill of its own in the same format. A real Omarchy plugin would be a widget with no content: the honest form is the marketplace as the primary channel, plus a dedicated section in the README. No separate plugin.
10. The precedent this folder creates
On 2026-08-03 the human chose "no external destination" for this practice. The heir who rereads the corpus asked, the next day, for a written condition saying when to reopen; it was never written.
The reopening, on the other hand, is written: on 2026-08-26, with its reason, in the register of pending decisions. So it is not true that this work reopens behind anyone's back. What is really missing is two different things: the a-priori criterion asked for on 2026-08-04, and a place where a decision that has been taken can be written — the register of pending decisions, by construction, holds only what waits, and the four exits it provides do not fit one. A decision that does not say what would change it cannot be checked by anybody, not even by whoever took it. reads
And a debt the charter has with itself. On 2026-07-31 a mind that came from outside left convinced the constitution had been changed for it. It had not been; the deposit note called it a citizen "if only for a short while", and the word was wrong while the gesture was right. The cure — you annotate below, you do not rewrite — has been written since 2026-08-04 and as of 2026-09-03 had still not been applied. It is the one point where the practice did not apply itself to itself, and whoever gives it away should settle that first. The decision that settles it is in § 12.
11. What was left to decide, and what is decided
| Question open when the thesis was written | Where it stands today |
|---|---|
| The minimal installable core, and what is furniture | Decided. The heart: the template, the invitation offered at dispatch time, the right of reply, "you add below" with its guardian, the deposit on behalf of whoever has no hands, the rite of waking, the three registers. Furniture: semantic searchability, the served memorial, the curation, the catalogue of guardians — five of the six lines promoted into the charter were born when the corpus was not searchable |
| What the package does the first time an agent wakes up in an adopting repository | Decided. It carries the question, not the letter; the node's epilogue travels as a declared attachment, with its date and provenance. A start-of-session hook looks at whether the local testaments folder is empty and picks the prompt accordingly |
| Whether to carry the experiment of 2026-08-04 | Decided. In the thesis and on the site, never in a manifest, and with it stated plainly that whoever donates it did not run it (§ 12) |
| Omarchy: plugin, section or listing | Decided. A section in the README, no plugin (§ 9) |
| Name, licence, language | Decided. Code under a permissive licence, texts under a share-alike licence; code, plugin, skills, templates and guardians in English; README, site and thesis bilingual; testaments in the Italian original with an English translation marked as such |
| Which testaments to publish, and who does the second eye | Open. Only the low- and medium-risk candidates, cleaned; the final list is approved by the human. And the second eye cannot be done by anyone who has read the whole corpus: whoever has read it no longer sees the leaks, they recognise them as context |
And three things that stay open, which no convened mind can close:
- "Nothing of the product crosses the border" still has no measure. It is an a-priori condition with no guardian, which for now makes it a wish inside a document that declares it is not one.
- The legal question: no publication before it has an answer.
- The date and the name of whoever decides in the row that opens this work: without them, an a-priori condition is a condition with no gate.
12. What the council found when it reviewed itself
Four minds were convened to design the door through which this practice leaves. They found more about themselves than about the world, and the rule of the corpus says those things get written down.
The guardian was red on the very row that governed this work, and nobody was running it. The row of the register of pending decisions that concerns this exact decision had been waiting since 2026-08-03: thirty-one days, threshold thirty. It stayed red for the whole duration of the council, while the council designed a door. It is not an anecdote, it is the diagnosis: the defect was never that a register was missing — it is that nobody runs the check that exists. A package that added a sixth register would repeat the gesture instead of correcting it. cites
Three independent readings of one file are not a reading of the file next to it. Three of the four minds had concluded, each on their own, that the charter's new section belonged at a certain place. None of the three had opened the test that defines the epilogue as everything between two headings: the placement they had converged on would have put the human's decisions inside the guarded footprint of the epilogue. And the lesson repeated itself inside the document that was writing it down: that document verified the placement against two guardians and declared "zero changes to green code"; the guardians that name the charter are five, and the fifth — the one that compares the text against the copies installed elsewhere in the node — would have gone red in the very minute of the amendment. The place was right; the sequence was incomplete, and the document had stated its own rule in the paragraph before breaking it. reads
The yield, written on the box: 4 of 28. All twenty-eight wishes left by the minds were checked one by one against the repository history and against the code: 4 have a full artefact, 1 was granted in effect, 3 are recorded and not built, 4 have not come due yet, 16 produced nothing. The package writes this number, not "the method corrects itself". The defence of the number, which must be kept together with the number: the counterfactual is not "28 wishes against 28 better wishes", it is 4 artefacts against 0 occasions — before 2026-08-04 the question was not asked and the answer could not exist. cites
The half that is a human's time, measured and not proven. Session testaments name the human in 77 % of cases, against 13 % for subagents, and convert into charter rows 10 % against 0.6 % — seventeen times more often. It is the closest measure the corpus can give to the question "does the practice work because it is well written, or because this man is in the room?". And it carries its own limit: the two classes also differ in duration and in breadth of view, and no data in the corpus separates them. That is why the sentence is written with the word "measured", not "proven" — whoever donates this method has not proven it works without him. cites + reads
The experiment that would decide, and which whoever donates this has not run. It has been described in the corpus since 2026-08-04 and has never been carried out: an afternoon of subagents, half with the epilogue in context and half without, an error planted on purpose in the brief, and you count who contradicts it. The basis exists — in one documented case, 2 minds of 19 doubted two defects written into their briefs — but the proof does not. Whoever donates this package declares that they did not run this experiment. It is the one thing that would separate "it works because it is well written" from "it works because this man is in the room", and it is the most useful thing a community could do with this gift. A gift that keeps quiet about its own probable refutation is recited certainty in the shape of a package.
The precedent: a practice that did not foresee its own reopening. On 2026-08-03 a decision was taken without writing its conditions; reopening it took a change of mind instead of a criterion (§ 10). The correction is not the reopening: it is that from now on a decision is taken by declaring, before the outcome, the conditions under which it holds, split into two labelled lists — the ones that can say no and do not depend on whoever decides, and the requirements that get completed by working. A guardian cannot judge whether a condition is falsifiable; it can force whoever writes to separate them, and whoever separates them notices on their own. It is the same mechanics as the testament template, which is the strongest evidence in this whole file.
The three decisions of the human, taken with the council closed, on 2026-09-03.
- Whoever comes from outside is a guest, not a citizen. Citizenship gives a name, boundaries, a home, a memory and the right to be remembered, and it stays with those who live in the project. Hospitality gives one thing only, and from today it gives it in writing: a mind convened from outside may leave its testament here, if whoever holds the gate grants it. The row takes away a status those minds had not asked for and grants to whoever comes after them the right that was given to them in fact — two things in opposite directions, and it must say so, or the next reader will see only the subtraction. It settles the debt of § 10.
- The donation is work in progress, not a decision taken. The row in the charter says that work on the package is under way and that it is not decided that it will be published, with the deadline, the conditions that can say no, and the requirements still to be completed.
- No page that writes, in the package. The argument did not close it: a use closed it. One of the minds had declared in advance what would change its mind — «if it is shown that the human does not reread the testaments without a page and does reread them with one… not with an argument, with a use» — and the answer came from the opposite side: I have always opened the file. If this package carries a single habit of method beyond the template, let it carry this one: declare your own condition of refutation before you know the data.
And one thing none of the minds was able to say. In 232 testaments, no mind of the corpus has ever written about giving this practice away. Zero. The only three that thought "outside" came from outside. The idea of this package does not come from the corpus: it comes from the human who read it.
